"Night Music" was great. It was a Broadway Video/Lorne Michaels production
and he's being a dick about releasing it to DVD. I even emailed Sanborn
about it. He said he's being trying to get it released but it's been a no go
with Michaels. He still feels he is owed money becuase he never recouped his
inital investment or some such rot. He could easily get it back with DVD
sales. This show tanked because they lost a lot of their advertisers after
an episode with The Residents and Conway Twitty. The first season was on NBC
(with Jools Holland and Hal Wilner involved) and came on after SNL, the
second syndicated (minus Holland). I have almost all of them on VHS and have
been meaning for years to cull out the performances and footage I liked the
best. Shit, I remember being in a cheap bourbon (Old Crow) and codeine haze
and seeing Pere Ubu performing a scorching version of "Waiting For Mary"
with Debbie Harry on backing vocals. The PIxies, Sonic Youth, Al Green, Sun
Ra, Hank Crawford, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, Betty Carter, Screamin' Jay
Hawkins, Nick Cave...The list was stunning. I'm going ot have to dig those
tapes out!
