It's funny that you mention this, I was discussing digital mastering with a colleague and the concensus is that the algorithm used for digital mastering and mixing is the same from firmware to software and does not emulate the physics of analogue; this implies the the way signals interact can enhance or cancel out one another (ie. harmonics)is very different from an algorithm. I am not sure if this makes sense but I would love to hear other people's ideas.
