Re: [bomp] Fwd: NEW YEARS EVE! in NYC w/Little Steven
Guest list? You'd have to pay me a lot more than $300 to be anywhere near
Times Square on a New Year's Eve. 250,000 drunks going berserk listening to
Mariah Carey caterwauling in the freezing cold waiting for a ball of light
bulbs to slide down a flagpole while hoping this isn't the time they're in
Osama's crosshairs.
How do you get in? How do you get back out again? If you're not a city
resident or on a PATH line, where do you leave your car? What's the reward
for all that suffering? 5 bands you've already seen a dozen times and will
see another dozen times under less stressful and dangerous circumstances?
No thanks.
As far as ESPN, their angle in garage rock is about the same as Dunkin'
Donuts. They want subscribers, and they don't care what kind of music you
listen to as long as their brand name is on the ads. They're owned by
Disney, which owns a lot of the new Times Square, and ESPN already has other
commercial outlets in their parent company's new playground. Little Steven
doesn't have a social angle when it comes to promoting garage rock, he just
wants to give it a fair shot at becoming more popular and commercially
viable, which in turn means it ain't gonna just be for hipsters anymore.
Unfortunately, commercial viability comes with all the other trappings that
commercial viability comes with in any other area -- corporate sponsorship,
radio-friendly production values, too much of the pricetag lost in the
promotional budget, un-hip geography, and high prices.
Waddyagonnado? Start a revolution?
