Greetings!
WLECOME BACK TO 1966 (with good reason)...
I am on vacation now, and it was well earned. Just as I normally like to do
when I get a bit of free time, I like to go out and hear some good live
music. That's exactly what I did this weekend. I attended 3 days of garage rock
at the 2005 Blackbeard Lost Weekend
(_http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/thespinnsblackbeards.html_ (http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/thespinnsblackbea
rds.html) ). This yearly festival is hosted and organized by The Spinns
(_http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/spinns.html_
(http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/spinns.html) ). Some of the bands that performed this years that I liked were New
Planet Trampolines, which sounds like Pink Floyd back during the 1965-1968 Syd
Barrett era. Another band that caught my attention were The Jet Set from
Milwaukee, and it is just straight forward Farfisa organ driven angst. The
Lobsters proved themselves to be exciting as usual. Dexter Romweber (and the
New Romans) rocked. The Points combined 60s garage with early 80s new wave
really well. Let's not, however, forget The Spinns. They have a debut CD
entitled "Lost Colony," which is available for $12.00. They are a cool Chapel
Hill trio seriously influenced by The Gonn and maybe really early Rolling
Stones. By the way, I was the MC of the event this weekend, and it looks like I
will be the MC next year. And I thank The Spinns for making all of this
possible. A DVD of Blackbeard Lost Weekend 2004 is also now available which costs
(I believe) $10.00. After 3 days of 12 garage rock bands, I found out late
afternoon that The Woggles were playing at the Cat's Cradle. The Woggles
provided their usual The Kinks meets The Fleshtones energy to Franklin Street. I
can't wait for The Woggles again at the next Sleazefest.
Cheers,
Melvin Little
