[bomp] Hollywood MOOGuls

Very sad to hear about the death of Robert Moog.

Regarding the early use of the Moog in rock, I love the story I once heard
Ray Manzarek tell in an interview about when Paul Beaver brought in the Moog
for the Doors to use for tracks on what became the 'Strange Days' album. Ray
says Paul was giving the Doors and their producer a Moog demonstration, who was
endlessly twiddling knobs, repatching wires, and getting all kinds of wild
and different sounds.

As he was doing this, he told the Doors "Let me know if I come to a sound
you'd like to use."

Jim says "Yeah, I really liked that real crystalline sound you had before.
We should use that one." The other Doors and the producer agreed. "Yeah, go
back to that one."

Beaver says "What sound was that?"

Jim says "About two sounds back."

"Crystalline sound? I don't know what that was."

The producer says "Just set it back to the way you had it before. We'll know
the sound when you get there."

Beaver tried like mad to backtrack his actions...turning knobs and doing
whatever...but they never found that sound again, much to the band and
producer's dismay...They had just learned the hard way that Beaver didn't know how to
go backwards with the Moog.

Consequently, from that point on, as Beaver was coming up with more sounds,
everyone had practically grab his hands off the controls and yell
"STOP!!!!!!!" as soon as they heard a new sound they liked, for fear of losing it again
with the slightest knob tweak.
