He's probably using an acoustic guitar transducer.  A double bass is a huge 
cavernous box, the perfect recipe for uncontrollable feedback.  He needs to get 
a really good transducer that's designed especially for the double bass -- in 
other words it specifically rejects the resonant frequencies of the 
instrument, thereby lowering the chance of feedback.
