Dirty Water tomorrow
Weirdly, Dirty Water has had a write up in a goth
magazine! Alternative London magazine
(http://www.alternativelondonmagazine.com) is
bimonthly and free in some goth/alternative clubs and
record shops.
The Boston has the feel of a shabby working mens bar
and the adjacent music room a reminder of a ricketty
school hall disco. But the Dirty Water club is
essentiall a live music experience, and the three
bands, scattered tables and chairs, and overflowing
ashtrays attract an extraordinary mix of
sharply-turned freaks from different scenes. Theyre
responsibe to the Priscillas, an all-girl garage-punk
line-up who bombard them with go-go beats and boots,
and swinging beehives and boobs. Its a pleasure to
hear slap-beats from the green-haired leather-chick
attacking the double bass in the Merry Widows. Word on
the street, however, is about the madcap eight-peice
dirty sleaze rock outfit, the Urban Voodoo Machine,
who sport two drummers and a percussionist - a deep
rhythmic thrill that underpins surf-guitar and muted
trumpet. A raw edge defines Dirty Water from other
nu-beat nights. A pretty friendly crowd too (apart
from one charming fella who informed me that I looked
like one of the Libertines, a heroin-addict, and a
c**t. Oh well, I suppose he left out that bit about my
devilish handsomeness.)
Anyway, for anyone in London tomorrow this is what
weve got going on:
THE ZODIAC KILLERS
The Zodiac Killers are as punk as you can get.
Featuring Greg Lowery of Supercharger, The Rip Offs
and The Infections (not to mention Rip Off Records of
course), you know theyve gotta be the real deal.
Their songs are the perfect anthems for the
pissed-off, stressed out, fed up voice inside of you
that's dying to get out - fast, snotty punk rock with
a crunchy sound thatll make any garage rocker drool.
So be prepared to be blown away by San Francisco's
premier punk band, The Zodiac Killers.
THE SHAKIN' NASTIES
Their over the top approach to rocknroll has a bit
of a Real Kids thing going on and not just because
they recorded a version of "Bad To Worse". What youre
gonna get is a snotty singer whose voice sounds like
it's still rasslin' with puberty while their
instruments detonate into an explosive, splattery
mess. Part of the nasty Bremen sound of blood-boiling
trashpunk, they aim to make you forget all about
lifes daily frustrations and have you catching
yourself shouting along like crazy to the pure madness
of Jaspars manic nagging vocals.
THE ULCERS
Raucous, rough-as-guts old-school punk rock a la The
Saints or Dead Boys that sound like they were recorded
inside a 1970 Ford Cortina at 130 kmh while the singer
was in the boot. "Hot Skin & Cold Cash", out on the
highly esteemed Damaged Goods label, is the kind of
record that groups who werent actually that punky in
1976 might well have made. There are snatches of Dr
Feelgood, Crime, Rocket From The Tombs the list
cant be endless its a very short list. The Ulcers
are that good! In 20 years time people will search
high and low for a long deleted copy of this instant
punk rocknroll classic.
THE POKERS
Hailing from Leicester, fuelled on a diet of booze and
cheap speed, The Pokers play punk rocknroll like
their lives depend on it. With their simple rule of no
song being more than two minutes long, this group is a
perfect appetizer for the night of pure energy youre
gonna get this evening. Think along the lines of the
Rip-Offs ,Oblivians,Ramones and youre almost there.
These guys play punk rock how it should be played!
Fabulously, full-on, frolicsome fun! Their debut LP is
out soon on Rip-Off Records
