phillyFREAKOUT! Number 15: NEW YORK INVADES!!! (again)
Visiting us from our neighbor 90 miles to the North are two MORE of New York
City's finest combos, HEADQUARTERS and COFFIN DAGGERS.
Dubbed "The band with the buzz" by The Village Voice, HEADQUARTERS have made
a name for themselves with their powerful pop melodies, 6T's inspired sonic
arrangements and intricately crafted tunes, tunes which evoke psychedelic
culture and classic pop sensibilities, but with a decidedly modern twist.
With wailing guitars, thunderous bass and drums, and the spookiest electric
piano/organ this side of the Munsters, this THE COFFIN DAGGERS take you on a
little ride right back to the 60s.
As always, local yokels MONDO TOPLESS will preside over the festivities with
their usual ooze and squawk, and THE MISTERIOSOS will start the night off with
equal amounts of fuzz, sneer and slither.
PLUS:
60's garage, slop n' soul all night long between sets, courtesy of DJ's Tom

THE LINEUP:
MONDO TOPLESS
Mondo Topless will throttle you. Grasp you in their firm grip. They won't let
go until you tell them that they're the best thing you've ever heard. It's
OK, you can lie; they just want validation that they're true rock stars. Once
they receive the accolades they so richly deserve, they'll reward you with a
relentless sonic onslaught of orgiastic magnitude that will appear
appocalyptic
in comparison to squealings of other, lesser "bands". Experience their
fuzz-drenched, organ-soaked mayhem. Slither and crawl as they caterwaul over,
under,
and through your brain. Then be sure to wash, rinse, and repeat afterwards.
They're still hawking their critically acclaimed album ("Go Fast!") on Get Hip
recordings, but never fear; they're spending some quality time in the dungeon,
coming up with more spew-tastic rumblings for your listening pleasure. Look
for
their follow-up on Get Hip later on in 2005. In the meantime, you can check
out a new recording of Solomon Burke's "Stupidity" on their MySpace page by

HEADQUARTERS
Though they draw inspiration from The Beatles, early Who, The Clash, and
Blondie, HeadQuarters can hardly be dismissed as a revivalist band. Taking
their
cue from classic rock favorites as well as punk and art-core, HeadQuarters has
developed a unique blend of melodic rock 'n roll with a conceptual pop art
perspective. Their sound is at once positive, but not naive; sexy, but not
sleazy; gritty but not careless; a visual sound in super 8 millimeter that
works on
both a cerebral and a visceral level.
Frontman Charles Wallace formed HeadQuarters in 2001 after conceptualizing
and producing the now indie cult classic "American Mod" as part of Group Four
Films. Wallace pieced together a 'mod'ern-day band of his own to compose the
song-track for the film, thus HeadQuarters was born. Since the film's release,
HeadQuarters has gone on to define the American Mod aesthetic and sound while
constantly expanding the musical boundaries that would lie therein. The film,
which is in regular rotation nationally on the Sundance Channel and has seen
screenings in clubs, music festivals and theaters throughout the U. S.,
Australia, Scandinavia and Europe, continues to keep HeadQuarters above the
musical
radar. But HeadQuarters is far more than a featured band in an indie cult
movie.
They are a well-established live act, having toured successfully throughout
North America (including Canada) and have the musical background to back up
their stylized image. This, underscored with a keen sense of timing and an
unparalleled ability to turn the classic into the contemporary, has kept
HeadQuarters
on the forefront of the independent rock scene.
After experiencing the usual band glitches of musical scratches and flakes,
HeadQuarters is now stronger than ever. In summer 2004, HQ placed in the top 5
of hundreds of bands competing in "Little Steven's Underground Garage Rock
battle of the Bands". The group continues to grow their local and
international
radio and press exposure, and will be in a major Swedish/Canadian documentary
on the Toronto club phenomena "Blowup", which will feature a live performance
by HeadQuarters, due out in fall 2005.
While previously working solely with producer Gordon Raphael (The Strokes,
"Is This It"), the new HeadQuarters recordings find the band pooling their own
collective knowledge to self-produce their biggest collection of songs to
date.
Raphael remains in the vision as a friend and Cber-consultant, but the new
recordings are set to be the seminal mix of sonic creativity and pop-crafted
hooks the band have been striving for.
With continued success at live shows throughout the United States and Canada,
considerable label interest, their key role in American Mod and their new
recordings set to be their biggest and best to date, HeadQuarters is poised to
show the rest of the world what NYC already knows; they are the band with the
style, the sound, the soul, and most importantly, the talent to transform
their
musical vision into a lasting reality.
Lead guitarist Nick Purpura adds, "The thing that I like the most, that
helped me make the decision to join the band, is that we're playing for the
song.
Anyone in the band can sit around and show you what a great musician they are,
but that's not what it's about at all. What's important is the song."

THE COFFIN DAGGERS
"The Coffin Daggers' self-titled debut begins with an explosion of
in-your-face surf guitar rock dubbed "Psychonaut" and doesn't let up one ounce
over the
next 14 tracks. With wailing guitars, thunderous bass and drums, and the
spookiest electric piano/organ this side of the Munsters, this New York band
takes
you on a little ride right back to the 60s. This album is an instrumental mix
of original songs peppered with a few covers. It's clear the four-piece group
takes a lot of cues from the masters that have come before and it would be
impossible not to make a comparison to Dick Dale. Still, the Coffin Daggers
are
keeping the surf-rock torch lit with their own interpretations - and from the
sounds of it are doing a mighty fine job at it.
While some instrumental albums tend to get repetitive and flat somewhere
along the lines, you'll find enough tempo changes to keep you hooked. The
Coffin
Daggers work extremely well together and their sound is electrifying, but it's
the tracks that give a little more focus to the organ, like "Forgotten
Prisoner" and "Avenue X" that really catch my attention. The organ really
gives these
songs that spooky, horror movie feel that sets them apart in my mind.
However, I'd be remiss to say that the purely guitar-driven tracks weren't
outright
smoking as well. Either way, both styles are perfect for parties or just as
driving music while you cruise a dark highway.
I'm not quite sure how a band like the Coffin Daggers emerged out of New
York, but they approach surf rock with intense passion and infuse it with
energy I
haven't come across in quite awhile. Fans of surf rock should already know
about this band, but if you don't you should boogie right out and pick this
up.
The Coffin Daggers' debut is also solid enough that even if you haven't given
surf rock a try in ages it's worth checking out. Many people don't seem to
enjoy purely instrumental music, but this album has enough twists and turns
that
it could keep almost anyone's attention."

THE MISTERIOSOS
The Misteriosos play raw psychedelic rock, with other strange influences, but
their love of all things lo-fi and an obsession with fuzz and tremolo remain
consistent. The passion for their sound comes through in their songs, which
can verge from in-your-face fuzzed-out psychedelic rock nb roll to darkly
sweet
numbers.
The band was selected in March 2004, out of more than 160 bands, as one of
the top 5 acts in Boston for The Little Steven Contest..and this was only
after
playing their first show. The Misteriosos have played with bands such as The
Blue Van (from Denmark), Mondo Topless, and Public Offenders. They perform
regulary in New York, at venues such as Arlene's Grocery, and their music has
been
played on the well-known WFMU show "Three Chord Monty."
The Misteriosos have recorded an EP, "West of Nowhere," which was released in
October 2004. It is available for purchase at all shows, and will soon be
available on the website as well. A full length recording is in the works for
spring 2005.
JellyRoll and Tulabs past accomplishments, as founding membes of successful
Phoenix band The Hypno-Twists, include performing at Austin's South by
Southwest Music Festival as well as touring regularly, including a 2003 tour
and
recording session at the famous ToeRag Studios in London, England. They have
played
with diverse acts such as The Datsuns, The Greenhornes, The Epoxies, Red
Elvises, The Slackers, The Seeds, Devotchka, and The Kills. In 2002, Tula was
honored to join Electric Prunes on organ for their headlining spot at The
Baypop
Festival in San Francisco. They were also pleased to be included on The Best
of
Little Steven's Cavestomp CD.
