phillyFREAKOUT! 14: NEW YORK INVADES!!!
Visiting us from our neighbor 90 miles to the North are two of New York
City's finest combos, THE BAMBOO KIDS (Mondo Topless label-mates on Get Hip)
and
THE DANSETTES. One scribe described The Bamboo Kids thusly: "The Real Kids
meets
Swingin' Neckbreakers graced with Richard Hell & The Voidoids and Johnny
Thunders & The Heartbreakers' urban swagger...". Now doncha expect a fun time?
Speaking of fun, The Dansettes will provide an overflowing fecundity of sonic
and
visual enjoyment. A triple-attack of girl group vocals, backed by a crack
garage outfit is certainly our recipe for a good time. MONDO TOPLESS plays
gracious host for the night's festivities, and The Up!, Philly's original 60's
mod
soul sensations, start things off good and proper.

PLUS:
60's garage, slop n' soul all night long between sets, courtesy of DJ's Tom
the Universal and Jon Pepe!!

THE LINEUP:
MONDO TOPLESS

Mondo Topless will throttle you. Grasp you in their firm grip. They won't let
go until you tell them that they're the best thing you've ever heard. It's
OK, you can lie; they just want validation that they're true rock stars. Once
they receive the accolades they so richly deserve, they'll reward you with a
relentless sonic onslaught of orgiastic magnitude that will appear
appocalyptic
in comparison to squealings of other, lesser "bands". Experience their
fuzz-drenched, organ-soaked mayhem. Slither and crawl as they caterwaul over,
under,
and through your brain. Then be sure to wash, rinse, and repeat afterwards.
They're still hawking their critically acclaimed album ("Go Fast!") on Get Hip
recordings, but never fear; they're spending some quality time in the dungeon,
coming up with more spew-tastic rumblings for your listening pleasure. Look
for
their follow-up on Get Hip later on in 2005. In the meantime, you can check
out a new recording of Solomon Burke's "Stupidity" on their MySpace page by

THE BAMBOO KIDS

"Brooklyn's Bamboo Kids play foot stomping, guitar string snapping, head
swinging rock and roll that would make The Kinks and The Jam proud. Their
self-titled release (Big Dipper) is full of shaggy haired guitar anthems with
solid
hooks and yelping booze and concrete powered vocals. If you don't have
whiplash
by the end of it, you aren't rocking hard enough." (Time Out b New York)
Since they were recently touted by the New York Press as "the best unsigned
and in New York," it's easy to imagine that somewhere the ghost of Joey Ramone
is smiling down on Brooklyn's Bamboo Kids. As opposed to the flashier
Strokes-like stuff that comes wafting out of Manhattan on clouds of
supermodels'
perfume and Ketel One, The Bamboo Kids kick up the kind of beer-drenched,
punk-tinged fuss you think about when you picture NYC's grittier outer
boroughs. The
trio's bare-bones attack sounds at times like the Faces' whiskey - and blow
-addled rave-ups, and at other times hints at something darker and meaner
Elvis
Costello in a very bad mood, say. Touches of glam surface in the frequent
"whoo-ooh" choruses, and Dwight Weeks's singinb sounds like he's got an
angry ferret
in his trousers. That's a good thing." (April 2004 - Houston Free Press)

THE DANSETTES

New York City vocal trio The Dansettesbwith a four-piece Hammond organ,
Wurlitzer-electric-piano-driven backing combobare pushing a set of new songs
in an
evergreen blend: Stax/Atlantic/Tamla Soul, a touch of Brill Building Pop, and
sweetly syncopated New Orleans rhythm & blues come together to make a kind of
"mod" Americana, if you will (and you shall!).
Getting down to the nitty-gritty of newly traditional styles that were once
as new as tomorrow (and have never really left us), this is still the sound of
young America: three women in their twenties who, with close harmony and close
observation of the "old school"bas well as a batch of fresh songs written
expressly for thembare attracting attention and impressing audiences up and
down
the east coast and as far west as Chicago. It cannot be long before they are a
coast-to-coast phenombyet here they are, still in Manhattan's backyard.

THE UP!

Born in the soul inspired streets of Philadelpia the band is made up of three
ex-frontmen of three very well known tri-state area bands. All three known
for their musicianship. As young, mod/soul roots inspired musicans the Up! are
focused on creating modern pop radio friendly hooks that remain true to the
'60s style sounds they admire. Finger picked 12 string Rickenbacher guitar
chimed
melodies blend with up beat soul drum chops, rich driving bass, and flawless
three part harmonies to produce songs for any generation. Their music sits
right in the middle of just about anyone's musical taste as it provides
several
familiar elements as well as a backbeat that will get anyone movin' and
groovin'!
