There's also "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere: The Complete Chronicle of the Who
1958-1978," a massive hardcover tome.  I don't have it but it looks like it
offers excellent, photo-filled coverage, and it stops with Moonie's death so
it only deals with the years that matter.

I have both, the Barnes book and this. "AAA" is more fact-driven, year-by-year, lists dates and recording sessions, etc...while the Barnes is really a personal history of the Who. Barnes was one of their early cohorts and at least through the publication of the book (early 80s) seemed to still be in the loop. Both are jammed with photos.
