[bomp] no appreciation for his own best work

re: dick dale he's just nuts. when he plays live now you're treated to a
lengthy version
of peter gunn, sometimes more than once per set. you get a vocal rendition
of house of the rising sun, also sometimes more than once per set. miserlou
is still great, but chances are you won't hear any of his other monster
instro tunes from the 60s. last time i saw him he spent about 5 full
minutes mid-set talking all this crap about deforestation of the trees in
south america and whatnot, said, "this next song is about how we must take
care of our environment" -- then he plays "the victor"!

SADLY (I have to chime in here), the guy goes on about how the sound on all
his Captiol and Del-Tone recordings just isn't any good, and that NOW he has a
good sound. It's totally frustrating and sad. To me, there's nothing better
than those things recorded at the Rendevouz Ballroom ("Surf Beat," for one) on
SURFER'S CHOICE and his Del-Tone singles, those were my lifeblood as a child.
He was the most popular artist in Los Angeles with those recordings, and the
only reason he didn't break nationally then was because he refused to tour
because he had a zoo at his house. Really. There's a fan mag article about
that from back in the day.

But even Dick Dale's Capitol Recordings like "The Victor" and "The Wedge"
can't be topped, and I really like that whole SUMMER SURF album, that has the
coolest sound to it, things like "The Star (of David)"... I used "Thunder Wave"
as the backdrop for a video interview I did with Ed "Big Daddy" Roth in college
back in 1986, it was just the perfect music to put behind "Big Daddy." An
ex-girlfriend who used to see him play at Harmony Park Ballroom also said that
Dick used to play "Spanish Kiss" at his shows with an acoustic guitar, and that
everybody really dug that. Dick Dale, though, is like too many boomers,
EMBARRASSED by the 1960s. That's what wrecks so much.

By the way, there are also many great Stan Kenton band recordings from the
Rendevouz Ballroom from the 1940s that are incredible... I have them on this
Capitol box set of 45s. So Live at the Rendevouz always seemed to work for a
recording location.
