[bomp] the RCA Rolling Stones argument -- personal use of records
Three gauntlets have to be laid down here...
a.) if Jack Nitzsche, who worked every studio in Hollywood, including Gold
Star with Phil Spector... constantly... told Andrew Loog Oldham that RCA was the
best place in town... now, why wouldn't you believe him?
b.) Dave Hassinger was truly a genius, and here's my point; he recorded the
Electric Prunes "I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night" not at RCA, but at Leon
Russell's garage, also known as Skyhill Studio... and the record is as strong
as "Paint it Black," kicking off the NUGGETS thing quite well, I might add.
c.) Though "Ruby Tuesday" is my fave rave single by the group, and I love
THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST, I've got to say that beginning with BEGGARS
BANQUET... eh... I'm not as into the Rolling Stones for some reason. This has
to do with "plays"... how many times I've played pre-Beggars material... and
how many times I've played Beggars-trough-Exile material. Forget the rest, that
(like "Hot Stuff") falls under "occasional guilty pleasure" (though I do
think SOME GIRLS and TATOO YOU are ace... still, no way will I ever listen to them
as much as pre-Beggars material).
So RCA, with "Satisfaction," "The Last Time" and "Paint it Black" at the RCA
center, fave singles along with "Ruby Tuesday" (not from RCA), gets the nod
for my Rolling Stones purposes.
12x5 still my fave Rolling Stones LP, though, thank you Chess.
Now, didn't the Yardbirds to "Mr. You're a Better Man than I" at Sun? Or was
that "Shapes of Things"?
