[bomp] Re: great drumming

Rob Branigin <euphorik6@yahoo.com> asked about our own
fave examples of great drumming...

Fun topic! Funny, too, that of the first two drummers
that came to mind, one is Crystal from The Brood.
First time I saw her with them, she was 15 1/2 and had
run away from home (at least for a night or two) to
gig with them at Geno's. She was great that night, if
unexperienced, and over the 10+ years she played in
the band, I saw her grow into one of the best drummers
in Portland. Even had the pleasure of gigging with
her as a fill-in member of Big Meat Hammer during one
of our numerous drummer transitions. She's awesome,
and has a truly powerful, natural rock 'n' roll feel.
(Funny the other Brood came up--I remember a gig the
girls did in NY when the other band was playing
elsewhere in the city; caused a bunch of confusion for
fans of both bands. I saw the female Brood--really
good show--and heard the male ones were tremendous as
well). Anyway, MopTop and Rocky were right on point
re the gals; for anyone who's not convinced, I'd
recommend another listen to "Vendetta" (my personal
fave) or the "I Need You There" single--literally two
of the most BLISTERINGLY R&R slabs of wax I've heard
by ANYBODY. Nuff said.

The other drummer I thought of immediately was Ringo,
baby, on "Helter Skelter." Everyone always seems to
rave about Charlie Watts, but I really like to see Mr.
Starkey get his due. He never struck me as a super
technical drummer--on the early Ed Sullivan clips, he
plays like a total TROGLODYTE, and I LOVE it. But
what always gets me his "thud thud thud
thud-thud-thud-thud" lead-ins coming out of breaks in
"Helter Skelter." They're simple, but PERFECT.

Paul Cook, I think, is also a CRIMINALLY underrated
drummer--the Pistols' original rhythmn section of Cook
and Matlock had a combination of kick, drive and hook
that made for some of the purest, most perfect R&R
I've ever heard. Likewise, Scott Asheton of the
Stooges. Oh gawd, and I haven't even GOTTEN to The
Sonics and The Wailers and The Raiders...
