Re: [bomp] Re: Cleveland Outsiders
Someone has released a bunch of Tom King and the Starfires tracks. I am not sure if it is on Collectables or Collectors Choice. The title is something like "Before They Were Outsiders". My memory is shot so don't hold me to the facts.

There was a whole greaser scene in Cleveland composed of bands like Bocky and the Visions, the Futuras, the Twilighters, Mickey and the Clean Cuts (I believe "Soapy" was covered by Lyres), and so on. The rival teen scene was bands like the Grasshoppers, the Motions, the Baskerville Hounds, and the Tree Stumps -- then later the Alarm Clocks, Looking Glass (not the hit one), James Gang, the Choir, Cyrus Erie, and the Society. Which is to say that I suspect the Outsiders' pop direction was more Capitol's idea than their own.

Heavy, gritty punk -- and great! I like the hits, but I think it's their best. It may be on that Capitol Collectors' Series CD that came out in the early '90s.

Unfortunately, it's one of those examples where a band's biggest hit is not indicative of the rest of their output. Most of the American Outsiders' other hits are some really weak-tea sub-Buckinghams blue eyed 60's power ballads--"Time Won't Let Me" is by far their best hit (I can't say best song because I haven't heard their album cuts, but I would wager that was the case).
