wow - thanks everybody for the tips on aussie beat...i am sitting here
listening to a CD of the master's apprentices (thanks mykel!!) and...god damn,
this shit is GREAT!! awesome guitar playing, killer harmonies, great
songwriting...reminds me in a lot of ways of the early pretty things, but with
more of a pop sensibility, kind of a mix of the best parts of the beatles, the
stones, and the pretty things, with a dash of yardbirds thrown in here and
there...i'm really surprised it took me this long to figure out how GOOD these
guys were. i mean, i liked "war or hands of time" from the nuggets 2 set,
but...i dunno...i want to say that that track doesn't sound really
representative of the band's sound, but i don't think that's really true. more
likely that this band had such a broad command of various styles that it would
have been very difficult, if not impossible, to single out one track that's
"representative" of their sound. sort of like picking out a beatles track from
1966 that was representative of what they were doing that year.
anyway, this is great stuff, and passes the litmus test for real greatness, cuz
these guys could do so many diufferent things so superlatively
well..."undecided" and "poor boy" are killer r&b stompers, covers of bo's
"dancing girl" and chuck berry's "johnny b goode" are great rockers - the
latter kind of reminds me of keef's best chuck-style riffing (ie "around &
around"), there's a really unique and cool take on the beatles' "i feel
fine"...killer stuff, all around....thanks again everybody for the
recommendation...it's gonna be a busy day, i still gotta get through the
missing links disc! (and the earl king - thanks again mykel....)
