[bomp] penny arkade

hey, has anybody else picked up the new penny arkade disc on sundazed? this is
really amazing stuff, and dovetails very nicely with the discussion we've
recently been having on the "LA sound." this is really great
beatles/byrds-influenced folk-rock...punchy, well-constructed pop songs with
tons of hooks and harmonies. great notes by mike stax, including interviews
with don glut, bobby donaho, chris ducey, and producer mike nesmith.

this band, aside from thecraig smith "acid-casuality genius" tag really has a
pretty amazing history - chris "song of protest and anti-protest" ducey wrote a
lot of the songs, the bass player (http://www.donaldfglut.com/)was known to
make superhero home movies & went on to write the noveliztion of "the empire
strikes back." the drummer was the same guy who played on the great bad seeds
single (the "taste of the same" guys)...

there's a little something for everybody on here, these are wonderfully written
and arranged pop songs recorded with garage urgency (the nez-produced tracks
were studio demos). if you haven't heard the maitreya kali LPs, you're in for a
real treat - if you dig the byrds, the springfield, or moby grape you are sure
to dig this - "color fantasy" is one of THE great california psych tracks, with
a great punchy riff treated to liberal doses of wobbly vox effects....sounds
like sunshine and patchouli, "thesis" is in a weird time signature (5/4, i
think) kind a weird "blonde on blonde"-period dylan meets a "get to you" vibe,
and "sparkle & shine" is truly gorgeous, perfect AM pop that reminds me a lot
of we the people.

there's some much great stuff on here...i mean, it's one of those "all killer
no filler" releases, and - for my money - is the coolest thing sundazed has put
out in years, guaranteed enjoyment for just about everybody on this list. it
amazes me that stuff of a quality this high has laid around unreleased for so
many years - for those tired of the bottom-of-the-garage-barrel comps that have
been so unfortunatwely common over the past few years, this is fer you...100%
great!!
