[bomp] For Sknoof, A Bomper Whom I've Gigged With
<<< But at some point he made a very self-conscious and ill-advised attempt to GO HIP. You can hear the first example of it on the "For Russell" album (from 1968) when he's in the middle of a routine about teaching his daughters to swim. >>>
As a young kid in the mid 1970s who found the fist batch of his Warner Brothers albums in the basement and liked them and played them a lot, even *I* sensed something...different...about the "For Russell" album. But I couldn't figure it at the time. Later I worked it out. The intimacy was gone...That was his first album recorded in a big hall rather than a smaller club. What I like about the albums before that is the sense that Bill is in a small room talking almost directly to some people sitting a few feet away, and it's casual. On "For Russell" it sounds like there's a fair distance (literally, but figuratively too) between him and the audience.
