[bomp] Re: Left Banke/Montage

<< Definitely check out Montage if you like the Left Banke. >>
Looks like I'm casting the only dissenting vote on this one. I have no heart
for the Montage album. And it's not just that it's such a letdown after
hearing it constantly compared to the Left Banke. The singing is really
uninspired and the vocals are way outta key in several places. The production
is just
overblown whereas in the LB it was virtually cinematic. If you're a Queen fan
(and you probably aren't!) then Montage is "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the Left
Banke is "Now I'm Here." Or if you're a Jellyfish fan, then LB is the first
album and Montage is the second one. Etc..............
<< The version of "Men Are Building Sand" on the Montage CD is much better
than the one on the Left Banke comp CD, There's Gonna Be A Storm. >>
GAH !!!!!! No way. Although Bert Sommer was certainly no Steve Martin,
"his" version is still way better than that Montage stuff.
Can I blaspheme further? I've always thought that history gives Michael
Brown too much credit. His contribution to the first LB album is
immeasurable, of
course, but they were as good or better on the second LP without him. And I
didn't care for anything he did afterwards. Montage, no. His contribution to
Stories, no. The Beckies? Ugh.
Then again, the "three other guys" did do that dreadful "Strangers On A
Train" LP in the late 70s, so they weren't so hot afterwards either.
But I don't take anything away from any of them......there's no way anybody
could equal or surpass those first two LB albums........
