My little brother claims to have seen a Brian Jonestown Massacre video on
M2, the promising looking MTV offshoot. Anyone know anything about this?
He said it was mainly live footage. He didn't catch the title, though.

Subject: My J. Richman Story

There was absolute magic in the air when Jonathan Richman performed at
Atlanta's huge three-day outdoor Music Midtown Festival, back during May
1995. He played very early on the last day of the event, under overcast
skies with a light rain falling. Undaunted by the drizzle, Richman -- who
was accompanied solely by a drummer and his own guitar -- kept up his own
spirits as well as those of the whole crowd. By the time he got to "Give
Paris One More Chance," the rain had stopped. Two songs later the cloudcover
broke and, to the amazement of all, Richman finished his set under a rainbow!

Subject: Re: Screamin' Mee Mees

I've got a Bag of Hammers 7" (Live from the Basement) by a band called
the Screamin' Mee Mees. Can't say it's the best 7" in the world, but
it *is* pretty interesting, as is the story on the back cover of them
being from the St. Louis area... Does anyone know if this is true?
Nobody around here seems to know anything about them. When and where
did they exist? I also saw another EP (Home Movies) available in the
Vinyl Injections catalog... is it any better than the live one I've
got?

Thanks,
- - --kopper

The Mee Mees (Jon and Jerry) are from around St. Louis and have been
doing stuff since the mid-70s. They put out the "Basement" EP in 1978
on Dog Face recs. Tne other 7" is two songs from the same time that
they were going to out put out as a second 7" but never did. The "Live"
EP is only live in that it was recorded live in their basement, not at
a club or anything. The "Home Movies" one is similar.

A year or so ago, they also did a split 7" with Mike Rep where they
each cover a song by the Twinkies (obscure '77 band from there). Mike
Rep and the Quotas have been friends of the Mee Mees for years, and
also have put stuff out since the late '70s. There's a CD on Anyway
called "A Treestump Named Desire" that's got stuff from ther past 20
years on it. Mike Rep had a hand in the production of the Mee Mees
latest album on Bag Of Hammers "Nude Invisible Foot Phenomena," which
is a weird, garage-psych, wigged-out masterpiece. It was recorded in
the basement as well, except for one song recorded in England.

Other than that I don't have much else to tell you, except that we've
been in contact with Jon for a little while now (he's a fan of Do The
Pop), and someday we'll get the whole story.

If you want to write to Jon, I'm sure he'd be happy to hear from you.
Write him at: PO Box 928, Ferguson, MO 63135.

OK, so I didn't go to their show AGAIN(harrumph! Curse my financial
anemia!). I was able to catch the tail end of their in-studio appearance
at one of Atlanta's college radio stations, WRAS. They performed "Ramadan
Romance" and "Flash Flood" and they sounded great! RR is now my favorite
Woggles song.

Aw hell. I guess that's the problem with being born in Australia - no
appreciation of the finer things in life. Seriously, though, my comments re
the Crown label may have been misplaced, seeing as I have never actually
seen or heard a REAL Crown recording (were they sold outside of the US?) - I
figured Crown was like the Aussie equivalents of same: K-Tel, Hitbound,
Dino, etc, etc. Now they ARE crap...

Brendan

PS: Didn't Crown also put out a semi-decent surf record (cf. Kicks #6)?

I read an article about Impala in Fizz (#8), and Justin, their sax/organ player,
said this about opening up for Dick Dale:
"Dick really lives up to his first name." I saw him on Conan O'Brien one
night, and he seemend like a pretty nice guy. Anybody else have the scoop on
this- is Dick a dick, or what?

Also, on a different note- I heard a copy of the new Untamed Youth album at
practice the other night, and it's great stuff (of course). Our bass player
always gets the finished product from Rager a few months before the official
release. Anyway, you're all gonna love it, guaranteed- but I think you'll have
to wait until June when it comes out.

One last thing- for those attending Gutterfest- I heard from our bass player,
who heard via Gregg, that the Cynics will not be playing. Any word on a
definite, for-sure, finalized line-up? Are tickets on sale yet?
T.J.
