Hi guys,

I need to communicate with an external hardware using serial in 4800
baud, 7 Bits, No parity and 2 Stop bits.
Since Serial driver does not communicate with 2 stop bits, does
anyone know how to use 7N2 configuration?

    Thanks in advance

Enable the "9th bit" garbage down past the RS232 section, inside the RS422
section in the docs. This seems stupid to the extreme for me, but I'm a
software guy. It really does work even though this is a convoluted and brain
dead way of accomplishing it.

An idle (rs232) serial line should be at the electrical level of a stop
bit and a start bit is always the opposite polarity, so the receiver
starts by looking for a stop-bit to start-bit transition, then it will
wait 1.5 bit-times before sampling the data stream. You then read in the
required number of bits (including parity bit if used) and sample the
stop-bit to make sure it's the right polarity (else you get a framing
error), then you check the parity bit if it's used. (I've done this in
software on other micros in the past - eek, 21 years ago!)

So 2 stop bits shouldn't make any difference to the receiver. The data
transmission speed will be slower than optimal though.

1.5 and 2 stop bits were only ever used on mechanical TTYs to give them
physical time to return the head back to rest position. Why anything
modern and non mechanical uses more than 1 is beyond me.

However, knowing that it's 7 bits and no parity, and 2 stop bits, means
that you can probably set a reciever to 8 bits, ignore parity and 1 stop
bit. I suspect thats actually what it's meant to be as 7-bit transmissions
are weird and someone had had fun translating it, or just wants to make
life awkward.

Thanks everybody.
It works fine using 8N1 configuration.

Thanks for the explanation, I always forget what's really going on with
serial lines even though I deal with them daily.

However, we tend to talk to 20 year old machine tool controls with firmware
written by flunky EE's that couldn't find a decent job so they decided to go
into industrial control. We are in fact using these devices as buffers so we
can use smart RS232 digboards of various flavors on the PC but lame whimpy
worthless one-byte buffer, software flow control, oh that's 9600 baud but
you have to pace the characters apart or we explode, CNC controls. The
smarter the RS232 controller the more difficult it is to do things that
require intimate knowledge of the actual physical voltages on the wire.
Throw in something like wireless ethernet RS232 and you are so far removed
from the actual wire voltages you have no idea what is going on.

I won't even mention all the fun and exciting protocols these same flunky
EE's come up with because they are deluded into thinking they can come up
with some magical error detecting RS232 protocol better than some stupid
software hack. No, I won't mention that at all. Though I will admit that
Solomon Reed thing is pretty cool.

This leaves us with using the RS232 device drivers written by somewhat more
knowledgable EE's supplied with the tiger or writing all that yucky stuff
that I can't comprehend myself. I personally would rather stick with "4800 E
7 2." This is currently the only way to do character pacing on the tiger.

Gordon
