32:180) The Anti-Neslon 27-MAY-92 0:59Lou Reed at Radio City, 5/27
Okay, Radio City is getting pretty close to arena territory, and it was priced pretty steeply, but, hey...
The Magic and Loss album opens with them made-for-arena guitar pyrotechnics, and that's how LR opened the show. Played the album straight through, in fact. There was a fifteen-minute intermission, during which time all the loosers made their way outside to grab a couple of smokes [Lou went smokeless, made a crack about a nicotine patch at some point].
Second half of the show consisted of a few tunes from his previous two records: "Smalltown," "Nobody But You," "Images," and "A Dream" from Songs for Drella, and "Dirty Boulevard," "Great Adventure," and "Strawman" from "New York." The band seemed more relaxed and playful on these tunes [M&L indeed quite the downer].
Band took a buncha from-the-waist bows [I don't think they was jokin], went away for a few minutes, came back and did four encores. Predictable choices, but really well-played. Some chunka chunka that harked all the way back to RnR Animal and Lou Live, mixed in with that cartoonish Rob Wasserman bass.
Oh yeah, speakin of cartoons, the Magnificent and Legendary Little Jimmy Scott was on hand for "Power and Glory" and a bunch of the encores. He was all dressed up in his little outfit (tippy tap). Sounded very, very cool. Still don't know what the deal is with this guy, but he was for sure a kick.
LR's playin again tomorrow night, don't think it's sold out. Show tonight was a good one, though the sound was kinda funky for a while. Radio City's pretty fun for a big joint, tame enough for us elder-type persons, you might want to check it out, particularly if you're an LR fan.
