Those who cut out early on Friday after Envelope played missed less than
nothing (and that's something); Harvey Sid Fischer managed to drag his
joke out for, I'd guess, a solid two hours. Weirder than weird, dumber
than dumb, the video that's floating around of him on public access tv
doesn't completely capture what we experienced last night (he "rocked,"
for one thing), but it's close enough. High points:
- the Aries Ram song (12:45am?)
- shouts of "Georgia Hubley!! Georgia Hubley!!" as Harvey
ticked off the list of Pisces (2:30am)
- "Talkin bout your Taurus, talkin bout yer bully bully bull..."
(2:45am)
I was REALLY impressed with James McNew -- wow. Pop tunes done by a
choirboy on top of earnest rhythm guitar on top of distortion. Pretty dang
hard to beat, I loved it loved it. WIsh I could decide whether he was
covering the Beach Boys when he opened with "I Can Hear Music," or the
Ronettes. There's a heckuva lot more Carl Wilson there than Ronnie
Spector, though, so I'll stick with my first impression.
I thought The Arnvelope sounded way ragged at first, and was bummed that
Gerard pulled his red silk shirttail out before the first song even
started (Harvey Sid kept his tux completely on for at least two songs).
But Envelope got a little better for me midway thru the set, and the
instrumental there at the end was pretty close to sublime.
[We were there for chugster glenn susser's 56th birthday celebration --
happy birthday, glenn!]

New York City complaints about my insomnia, laid a bottle
