from: Wilson Smith <neslon@panix.com> I'm sticking with glenn!! What a treat!! Sat with glenn susser in the old men's section of the fez for the Chickfactor show tonight, in the booth by the door, and had not just tara key come over to the table to say hi, but then Ira Kaplan comes over to talk to us... holy heck!! Glenn, what are you telling them, that you're a rootin tootin producer or something??? I axed Ira about the YLT b-sides comp and he said it might very well happen, but that it was a heckuva lot of effort tracking down stuff and getting permissions. Still, they'd gone through a bunch of stuff, apparently, and made tentative selections of what would be included, and they are in fact mulling over the idea of being incredibly self-indulgent and turning it into a double CD with, like, lots of instrumentals and things... sounded great -- "Cast a Shadow" made the cut, but I think he said that "Time Fades Away" didn't... I did not, as I'd promised myself I would should the moment ever arise, grab him by the collar and make him tell me what the fuck "Tom Courtenay"'s about, but there's always next time (assuming I'm with gs). Show was excellent, georgia did all covers, with a free drink going to anyone who could name the composer of each tune (started with a beautiful version of Waterloo Sunset and I was like, oh, no sweat, i know this! and then didn't recognize a single tune after that). Sue Garner was awesome, just monstrously talented, beautiful voice, spirited guitar playing [she laid it in her lap and played it like a drum for the last number] and likewise tk, whose show it really seemed to be. Ira played with all of em at one point or another (cept the very first opener, whose name I forget). W

from: Brian Tonsmeire <BRTONS@aol.com> ylt concerts Yo La Tengo continued their spring trek of East Coast colleges with a March 26 show at Trenton State College in New Jersey. They performed at the campus pub, "the Rathskeller", a room which appeared to be specifically designed for live music with a permanent stage set up front. The audience of at most 50-75 people sat at tables and booths scattered around the room. The excellent accoustics were perfectly complemented by the $1.15 pints of beer. YLT were preceeded by two excellent bands, Spoon and Spent, and played a fantastic set of their own. It was the first time I had seen the band play while I was seated which added a different perspective. I was able to pay much more attention to the group as a whole as I really got to "see" the show. The set began on an uncharacteristically quiet note with "As the Hour Grows Late." Throughout the show the band played in a tight groove; the best I've ever heard them sound. The set touched upon most of their albums climaxing with what has become ther standard set closer, "Blue Line Swinger." I had never before noticed how hypnotizing Georgia's drumming could be. BLS is as much a showcase for her talent as it is for Ira's guitar playing. At the end, Ira looking exhausted, walked off the stage directly to a seat by the bar. There were no encores. Here's the set list: As the Hour Grows Late ? (Too Late??) Flying Lesson Decora I Heard you Looking (Featuring a member of Spent on organ) Tom Courtenay (The sped up version w/ Georgia singing lead) ? (A song from Ride the Tiger) Satellite Drug Test False Alarm Sudden Organ Blue Line Swinger This past Friday, April 12, YLT played Silliman Dining Hall at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. This was the fourth show I've seen in the last month and each time the band has played a mostly different set. Unfortunately I still haven't seen them perform "Crispy Duck." Anyway the band finished with "False Alarm" --> "Sudden Organ" --> "Blue Line Swinger." Tonight however Ira played the first half of "False Alarm" on guitar which was an interesting change. Below is the complete set list: Artificial Heart Flying Lesson Tom Courtenay Pablo and Andrea Drug Test Sedimentary (A Dump song sung by James) Summer Nowhere Near Motel 6 (preluded by a snippet of "I was the Fool...") False Alarm Sudden Organ Blue Line Swinger Encores: ? (Some Beat Happening sing) ? (The song with Georgia on bass) Once again I was awed by Georgia's drumming. During "Sudden Organ" she nearly transformed into Keith Moon. Amazing. from: Yuri Ikeda <yuli0@ns1.eis.or.jp> Japanese edition At last, Japanese edition of Electr-O-Pura was released. It has 16songs. (14 songs of original version, Tom Courteney and Mr Ameche plays the stranger from Camp Yo La Tengo). With the linernotes, lyrics(!), and translation of it. Now, the only thing i (we) hope is thier gigs!

from: Susan Braxton <sbraxton@denr1.igis.uiuc.edu>> I wrote to Ira and asked about 'that guy that wrote "the way some people die"' (his name is David Schramm). He's in his own band now, the Schramms (formerly the Walking Wounded, changed because another band already had the name). They have several CDs out (two with Shcramm's YLT songs), and I was able to find them in Champaign, so I guess they're available anywhere. You can put this in the newsletter if you think others will be interested. Also, Ira mentioned that Ride the Tiger is out on CD, with some extra cuts and a band history. I couldn't find that in Champaign... So, if anyone knows how to get it, let me know; I've about worn out my vinyl copy over the last 10 years. Ira's amazing--I still can't believe he answers fan mail personally, and so FAST (under 2 weeks!). Susan

from: Michael Morris <mmorris@mail.oeonline.com> Various YLT ramblings A few things for the next Digest.... * Finally broke down and bought the Teenage Fanclub "Neil Jung" CD5 the other day. For those not in the know, it has a 12:43 cover of "I Heard You Looking" for one of its additional tracks. I like their version quite a lot. Despite it being my favorite YLT song (more on that later), the "Painful" version has always disappointed me in that it seems that the band is just getting warmed up when the 7-minute fade out comes in. The TFC recording (as opposed to the actual performance) seems much more well thought out; there is a fitting denouement to the song that the additional length allows. If any of you have seen the 17-minute YLT live version of the song (which TFC was probably influenced by on their tour together), you know what I mean. Outside of the ending, it's mostly a by-the-books cover, with a quieter, more acoustic sounding beginning than the original. It's about as close as you'll come to getting your money's worth at $8 for one song. *A few weeks ago on TV, they had one of those "Before They Were Stars" specials on, and Michael "Kramer" Richards was featured in a mid-70's "Dating Game" episode. He looked *exactly* like Ira Kaplan. *After working for a big corporation for a few months, I've decided that the intro to "Blue Line Swinger" is an homage to dial tones. The "inside" dial tone for calls within the company sounds exactly like the first note, and the "outside" dial tone (which anyone hears upon picking up the phone) mirrors the second. I find myself waiting a few seconds to hit "9" to dial out so that I can temporarily lose myself in a YLT daydream.
*I'd like to volunteer my time to do the first (annual?) YLT Digest poll. All you have to do to enter is answer the following questions. 1. What are your (up to) 7 favorite YLT songs? 2. What is your favorite YLT album? (please, only pick one) 3. Which of the YLT albums do you own? (name any of their 7 releases which you have: "Ride the Tiger", "New Wave Hot Dogs", "President", "Fakebook", "May I Sing", "Painful", "Electr-o-Pura") 4. Do you own any Dump albums? If so, which one(s)? 5. Classify the following 3 items as like/don't like/no opinion/not familiar with: YLT's electric sound; YLT's acoustic sound; Dump. send replies to: mmorris@oeonline.com (**NOT** to the YLD address) Seeing that this goes out on May 1, I'll cut off voting on May 21 so that the results can go in the next Digest. If the a.m.y-l-t newsgroup really exists, I'd appreciate it if someone could post this there. Vote early, but please don't vote often; also, please don't change your mind after you've already voted, and try to vote again. Thanks!
from: Purnell, Vernon <KPSNET1!KPSGPO!vpu@kpsgroup.attmail.com> Warhol Party May 17, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh will celebrate their 2nd anniversary with what promises to be quite a fete. A Velvet Underground exhibit of memorabilia from Sterling Morrison's collection that was donated to the museum by his widow will open that weekend. The museum will have a party open to the public and, at 10:00 PM in a tent set up in the museum's parking lot, Yo La Tengo will play as Warhol films are projected -- sort of a quasi-Exploding Plastic Inevitable show. It should be quite an event -- maybe YLT will even resurrect "It's Alright (The Way That You Live)" for the occasion.

from: "Sean M. Hurley <hurleysm@ctrvax.Vanderbilt.Edu> The alt.music.yo-la-tengo newsgroup has propagated itself to at least a few different sites around the world. No rmgroup messages have been sent, so if any particular site hasn't picked it up it is because the news admin at that site has chosen not to subscribe to it. Anyone who doesn't get the newsgroup and wants to should contact their news admin and request that their server pick up the group. There's been very little traffic in the group so far, but hopefully if more sites subscribe to it things will pick up a bit. -Sean hurleysm@ctrvax.vanderbilt.edu
