From: Sam Adams <username@cc.swarthmore.edu> After purchasing Luxury Condos... I decided to take a look and see if I couldn't figure out when exactly the darn thing came out, and after a little detective work I'm happy to say that I've pretty definitely set the date at 1985, after the "River of Water" 7" but before "Ride the Tiger". Here's how I figured it out: 1: You know that space on the interior of an LP? In-between where the grooves end and the label begins? Well, written in that space are the words "Twintone 9-85". Pretty simple, right? It's a Coyote release, but it was distributed by Twintone, and the 9-85 is obviously the date of manufacture. Viva Vinyl!! 2: But that's not all. The liner notes list YLT's lineup as Ira, Georgia, Dave Schramm, and Dave Rick on bass. Since the liner notes for Ride the Tiger tell us that Dave Rick left the group before the recording of the first album (he played on the first single) BUT this is a Coyote sampler, this indicates that the tracks was recorded after the first single (after YLT made the move from whatever label the first single was on to Coyote) but before Ride the Tiger, making this one of the earliest ever YLT songs to be recorded! Impressive, non? (Nit-picker's note: the LP label actually lists the song as "Private Dalmations", although the inner and outer sleeve list it as "Private Doberman". Just thought you'd wanna know.) [Upon listening to Private Doberman, I found it sounding rather familiar. I get the feeling that PD is trial name for a song idea that was later reworked and re-recorded under a different title. (the story of jazz) - tim] In more recent news, YLT played as "Jad Fair with Yo La Tengo" at some Woodstock thing in NYC last Friday. I couldn't make it, but it sounds like an interesting prospect. Anyway, that's enough for now. Seeya later. Sam
From: Wilson Smith <neslon@panix.com> For what it's worth, looks like it was "Dangerhouse" records that the Randoms recorded their one and only record for ("International DIscography of the New Wave" - Omnibus Press, 1983 is one heckuva reference if ya can find it -- just noticing that Ira Kaplan soi-meme is listed as one of about thirty or fifty collaborators). Also, by the way, belated thanks for putting this flippin digest together -- it never fails to blow me away that there's a whole dang mailing list devoted to these guys... thanks. Wilson Smith neslon@panix.com CIS:70741,422 And oh yeah, glenn and sam are right, the double-drumming simply ROOOLZ; was astonishing, a major, major kick...
from: wer@library.mt.att.com Hi. The title is really "Tall Time Tales". Georgia and Ira did the narration. Don Christensen did the music. One flyer I have describes the film by saying "The flow of time is explored in a series of whimsical vignettes". Will
From: Patrick B Leek <coi0555@dcsc.dla.mil> Tim, came across another compilation. It's called "Slanged" and includes YLT and another of my favourite groups - "Eleventh Dream Day." YLT sings "Some Kinda Fatigue." BTW, I also came across a copy of YLTs first single "The River Of Water" on picture sleeve. It would be nice if I come across "The Asparagus Song" one of these years. from the yo la tengo gazzette (ish #2) A band I was in opened for YLT in Charlottesville, Va in the winter of 1991, and we were horrible, just horrible. We couldn't remember how to play our own songs (assuming we were all attempting to play the same song at the same time). at the end of the set I tore all the strings off my guitar; dramatic, yes, but I did so we couldn't possibly do an encore After that show we sorta stopped practicing. A few weeks later I told the drummer I wanted to quit and he said "okay". -John Beers, ex-Lovekillers For me it hands down has to be February, 1989 two-week tour of the South where I tried to go - well, I did... I went the whole tour without drinking a beer. But I gained 15 pounds from hanging out in Ben & Jerry's and bakeries and things like that. I had to compensate for lack of alcohol in my life through sweets. And I just bloated out and didn't have any fun at all. So that is my personal worst experience with Yo La Tengo. Thank you. -Dave Weckerman, The Feelies My worst experiences with Yo La Tengo do not involve playing with them (per se). These people are barely human - I mean this in a negative sence - and associating with them is very unpleasant. YLT cultivate an attitude of my music being of great significance, the sort of shallow arrogance usually associate with self-mythologizing adolescents whose concept of self puts undue emphasis on the word "sensitive". Actually performing with them on stage is a relief from associating with them. While playing, conversation is (thankfully!) impossible. I never know the sing or even what key it's in. sometimes I try to figure it out, but usually I just make noise whick, as we all know, is a musician's most perfect means of expression. The last time I played with YLT I had just remembered the riff for "Ramblin' Rose" when they abruptly stopped the song and started playing something dull and inexplicable. Of course, they are power-mad, arrogant, and arguementative, which makes for a tense double bill. fighting back is useless. Just give in. It's less noisy. I guess I don't have a "worst" memory. Just knowing these guys establishes a continuum of anxiety and disappointment [six]. Anyway, what could be worse than having to listen to them? -Matthew "Wink" O'Bannon, 11th Dream Day.
