Hi All , I was lucky enough to find a copy of <<Surviving Desire>> at The Naked Eye this week. <<Drug Test>> is used as background music in one bar scene. Ylt fans will enjoy the Ned Rifle (a.k.a. Hal Hartley) score. For that matter, Ylt fan's will enjoy the entire Hartley Film Library. - Another Cd single was released last week. The snowmobiling cover has deja-vu written all over it. Was this taken from my third grade science book? The second track, a cover of jad fair's <<Ashes on the Ground>> is absolutely gorgeous and worth the price of admission. my shop didn't have a vinyl copy, so i was unable to check for different tracks (a la shaker). - Thanks go out to everyone who contributed to this issue. tim tim@vestek.com p.s. circulation 40
from: moebius@netcom.com Like a long stretch of background static that slowly is revealed to be a compelling signal as one's attention is paid to it, the band Yo La Tengo was a present and nearly inescapable part of my collegiate life for several months before i finally settled down to listen to it and take it to heart. When I returned to the University of California at Santa Cruz for my junior year (1989) there i discovered that my close friend Jonathan had become obsessed with a song over the summer, and he played it damn near incessantly on his acoustic guitar. Often I would enter his dorm room to hang out and chat, only to end up sitting quietly on his bed while he sang his song to me from his chair on the other side of the room. The song in question was, of course, "Speeding Motorcycle." unlike many of the things John crooned to me over the years (almost always unbidden) it really caught on with me; the song fit my state of mind in those times very well. after getting that song down cold, Johnathan began playing other songs from the _Fakebook_ album, and before long I developed a vague interest in the record, which was by this strange band that was called "Yo La Tengo," even though none of the members seemed to have Hispanic names. at the time one of Jon's big things was pointing out how one of the members of the backup chorus on "Emulsified" dissented with the others...every time they said "Alright!" one supposedly says "No!" To this day he swears he's right about this, and maybe so, but i remain somewhat unconvinced. anyway, the more i listened, the more i was convinced that _Fakebook_ was a damn good album...i recorded it from Jon, along w/his CD of _President Yo La Tengo/New Wave Hot Dogs_, which he'd aquired since we'd returned to school. And that's how it started, in a nutshell...not too exceptional, but if Jon hadn't discovered them through an obscure review somewhere and decided to get the album on a whim somewhere (he bought it used, actually), i'd probably be discovering the group as a result of all the _Painful!_ hype and would probably relate to them in a much different way than I do now. as it stands, my strong attachment to the band is about 60% because of my admiration of their music and technical skills and 40% because of the connection they have to my college days and my strong friendship with Jonathan, who i'm still close to to this day. sadly, i've seen YLT live three times now, and Jonathan hasn't managed to see them once... ah well, such is life... moe.
from: olivier@everest.ee.umn.edu Hi whoever, I thought I might write a coupe of things about the Yo La Tengo / TFC concert we saw yesterday. First, Teenage Fan Club are really bad,so do not expect to go and see an excellent double bill, it's not. Well. At least yesterday, it was not. Or maybe It's just Yo La Tengo played much louder than TFC did...TFC really looked like a bunch of college kid trying to play Big star/Beatles song.Pretty sad. Georgia Seems to have a slightly bad day yesterday, she looked pretty much exhausted and was obviously too nervous ( "nowhere near" was not so great ). Most of the Hour and 15 minutes long set was based on "painful" , except for the opening song ( Barnaby ), one song from "Shaker" , and a nice surprise - as it's my fav yo la tengo - "Drug Test". Nothing from "May I sing with me". "I heard you looking" closed the set, and was Yo La tengo at full speed. James switched to guitar on "From a Motel 6" while Ira was on the new-wave-organ. Ah. Enough of the technical stuff. I am just wondering why YLT even bother to open for Teenage Fan Club, as I think the response from the crowd was probably better for them than it was for TFC...beats me.. I think they deserve better than that. They were much more relaxed when I last saw them on their own...and I think they know they deserve more than that too. No "crispy duck" tho. Sorry. Did not Cry this time.
from: dxweiler@watarts.uwaterloo.ca Here's a set list for the show in Toronto on the 13th (I'm pretty sure I remember everything): Bad Politics (??) Big Day Coming (fast version) From a Motel 6 Drug Test Did I Tell You Nowhere Near Shaker Double Dare Sudden Organ I Heard You Looking "Sudden Organ" was a long rockout, seemed to go on forever at the end with this repetitive guitar riff but I thought it was really cool. "Did I Tell You" was a slow organ version (Georgia on organ). "Bad Politics" (don't recognize the song) had James on lead vox and bass, Georgia on geetar and Ira on drums (!!). Overall a pretty loud and rocking set, "Did I Tell You" and "Nowhere Near" being the only quiet tunes. I thought they kicked (again, altho they didn't quite freak out as much as when I saw them a couple years ago) and the crowd (most of whom, let's face it, were there to see Teenage Fanclub) seemed to really dig them as well, so that was cool. Was talking to Ira after the show and he said they have a new single out on Matador: two versions of "From a Motel 6," an unreleased instrumental, and a Jad Fair cover. Supposedly it's out already. He also has a Toronto hot dog fetish and was asking for directions to a vendor. Anyway, I will keep in touch with more tidbits as I dig them up (I have a bunch of articles on Yo La buried somewhere). Like you, I was converted after picking up Fakebook on a whim and I've been a diehard ever since. Just a couple brief addenda to your discography... On the Freedom of Choice comp (1992) Yo La cover Blondie's "Dreaming." On a 1989 Homestead sampler called Human Music they cover Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby." There was an early early single which featured a cover of Love's "A House is not a Motel" on the B-side; it has just been tacked onto a CitySlaang reissue of Ride the Tiger (four bonus tracks). There are also some comp. appearances which I have never seen but only heard about from Ira: "Artificial Heart" on Delicacy and Nourishment (East Side Digital, 1992) -a song on Ernest Noyes Brookings volume 3 (ESD 1992; one of a series of albums in which bands set music to poems by an old-folk's home resident who was featured in Duplex Planet magazine). -live acoustic version of "Lewis" on Best of Mountain Stage vol. 3 Cheers, Derek Weiler Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
