YOsters. Now this is what we want to see on the Tape Around the World crossland line! This tape is definitely something that would be extremely hard to duplicate, one reason being it just wouldn't occur to many people, another, I'm under the impression this stuff just isn't all over the place. 'Smile' by the Beach Boys, the album that never was. I've had the bare minimum of exposure to the BB's, and how bare that minimum is I never realized. The story behind the 'Beach Boys album that never was' has been well provided with the tape, so you'll have to wait to check that out. As for the music, I have to say, it's pretty frightening. Really, downright scary. Like "The Beach Boys?". Icons of Normality standing on their heads. You don't realize how something touches your psyche until it shows it's other side and in the Beach Boys case, kinda spits in your face.

There are more then one version of a number of the songs, a bootleg version and an 'official' version in most cases. The boots are definitely interesting, the sound quality of the source is fair to middling+, but definitely suits this departure from typical Beach Boys, an astounding departure if you ask me.

I'm totally in the dark on the chronology at work here, but, initially, it sounds as though a major collision between the pure pop of the Beach Boys and the British Invasion, the whole thing at once. It almost seems like a culmination of everything that was going on, bashed together off a wall or two. Rubber wall? Mebbe. There's even some vocal degeneracy that brings to mind some of Alice Cooper's more touched smeering.
